Munich, one the four metaCCAZE trailblazer cities, is focusing on promoting bike use for last-mile deliveries and shifting freight transport to electric cargo bikes and compact EVs. Its Mobility Strategy 2025 aims that by 2025, at least 80% of its traffic consists of zero emission vehicles, public transport, walking, and cycling. To achieve this goal, the city plans to promote bike use for last-mile deliveries.
As urban deliveries increase, the City of Munich intends to shift freight transport to electric cargo bikes or compact electric vehicles. As part of metaCCAZE, and together with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the city is undertaking an ambitious co-creation process involving many local stakeholders. This approach ensures that the mobility solutions developed are in line with the needs and aspirations of the community, resulting in more resilient and sustainable transport solutions.
On 27 June 2027, the City of Munich’s Mobility Department hosted a “bicycle-logistics” workshop. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including various departments of the municipality, transport and logistics consultants, and logistics companies.
During the workshop, the city shared insights from its first bike logistics hub at Viehhof and discussed the potential for additional hubs. In an interactive session, participants exchanged ideas and identified possible locations for new logistics hubs. Logistics companies of various sizes expressed interest in using e-bikes at these hubs but emphasized the need to speed up administrative approvals and construction processes. Working cooperatively, participants began to outline future business and governance models for the hubs.
